The grapefruit diet, the moon diet, the baby food diet, the cabbage soup diet…should I go on? All these diets have the perfect solution to our problem: extra weight…or so they promise, yet rarely achieve. The one thing they do have in common is restricting calories and starvation. This is what dieting is! Nothing to do with what a diet – to be read as necessary food intake – should be. Nevertheless we keep on going back to them…AND THEY NEVER WORK.

In case you are tempted to fall back into the bad pattern again, here are the three reasons that should make you run away and look for healthy alternatives to weight loss:

#1: You always feel hungry

You might be able to struggle through a few days of a very low calorie diet, but truth is you will constantly feel hungry. So, after you manage to lose some pounds, it is not rocket science, since your intake is lower than what you burn, your body will start pilling on the pounds at warp speed. Since for the days you were dieting your body was deprived, now it will want to make sure it has the reserves it needs, should you deprive it again. Even if you add just a little more than what you used to eat in the “diet phase”, and sensibly less than what you used to eat in general, you start gaining weight. My best friend has this expression: “I feel hungry and fat!” Awful feeling, yet, I’ve been there, done that, so DON’T!

#2: You always feel tired

Another huge problem with diets, especially those very low in calories, very low in carbs, or a combination of the two is that your body does not get enough energy to function. This is extremely dangerous, especially if the “diet program” also includes a lot of exercise. Hey, I did not say they only recommend bad stuff. But, eating like an ant and running like a hamster on a treadmill are not really the healthiest combination. By depleting your body of an essential macronutrient like carbs, you significantly reduce the body’s capability to stay energized. Life does not stop just because you are on a diet, and feeling tired all the time will affect your performance at work, your stamina and overall mood.

#3: Diets do not last

Even if you are successful at losing those 10 pounds in 5 days, or whatever the magic formula they sold you was, once you finally get off dieting and start eating as you usually do, and you know that will happen, disaster follows. Usually, you gain the weight back, plus some extra pounds, and you are desperately looking for the next super diet that will make you lose more weight even faster than before. Not a surprise they call them yo-yo diets!

The truth is, there is no magic formula. If you control your portions, you include all the macronutrients in your diet and exercise regularly you have bigger chances of getting rid of the unwanted weight and keeping it off.
